However I do stream movies from this PC to my HTPC downstairs via Wi-Fi.

I think I will do a transfer of E: to the new 1TB drive and then use the spare drive that creates as an internal backup for D: or Raid 1 the D:
what about using the spare drive for temp and paging files, if you want to get more creative you can move the my documents folder off the c drive as well in a couple of clicks, open start menu, right click and properties on my docs and hit move.

i have windows on my 150gb raptor, my docs, downloads and stuff on the 1tb samsung along with the temp files & my paging file on a 80gb partition on a 250gb maxtor i didnt know what to do with.

you can move temp files from enviroment variables in system properties > advanced.

im considering moving temp files into the paging files partition to take the load off as the paging file doesnt do much unless an app's loading (its fixed)

I have already put the 'my documents' folder onto the D:\ drive and I have also moved the paging file to D:\ as well.

If anyone know's how to move the profile i.e documents and settings folder can they divulge please? I would like to move this to D:\ as well.

I'd buy a big SAS RAID card and a load of 15K SAS drives in RAID 10 for the best setup.

The ebst setup depends on what you need and how much you have.

Does anyone else think 1TB is a lot to lose if 1 drive dies?

I use 4 SAS drives in RAID 5 at work... lol, fast!

On the HDD performance - I can guarentee a noticable performance difference between an old 20GB or even a 40 GB HDD and a modern HDD on the same system since we are writing off a whole load of machines at work purely because of the HDD's.

    Re: New Samsung 1TB Drive

Newer hard disks are faster for benchmarks (sustained reads/writes), but since lots of real world usage involves the disk head zipping all over the disk, improvements in HDD speeds aren't as apparent in everyday usage.

You need flash/SSD based storage with their tiny access times, to get the wow factor

Been running an old laptop off a CF-IDE adaptor with win98 on a 128Mb CF for a few years now
(yes 128Mb is small, but it was expensive back then!)
the 0 seek time and no disk thrashing really makes it a decent machine.
Still no sign of the CF card "wearing out" as many people would have you believe happens...
