is there such a thing as a SATAII cable, or will any old SATA cable be SATA300?

cheers mate - thought as much, but I have seen a "SATAII" cable somewhere along the line ~ marketeers dream no doubt
SATA II sockets have the ability to use a clip on the cable to stop it being pulled out accidentally. So, a true SATA II cable would have this clip. This doesn't stop SATA I/II cables being fully interchangeable though.
If you can't keep up, stick with reality...
theres no difference between cables, it's just that as hibby rightly says cables that are marketed as 2ndGenSATA (SATA II) just have clips to stop them falling out.
to re-iterate: it's just a marketing ploy the latching mechanism is just a fancy plug for more sercure attachment since the first generation SATA plugs were prone to falling out if nudged. The L shape/size is still the same and so is the internal makeup of the cable.
the 2ndGenSATA cables can be used with 1stGenSATA devices and vice versa
