    Weird AC'97 post SP3 problem

    Hi guys
Recently updated my desktop pcs to XP SP3, one has XP Pro, and the other has XP Home
Weirdly, sound on my XP Home PC (Athlon 2800+ and 2gb ram) has stopped functioning altogether post sp3 update, whereas my core2duo pc has had no issues

The XP Home PC reports for it' AC'97 realtek chip that no mixer devices are available, and looking in properties of the device, it says that the driver is enabled but is not yet started.

Very annoying, and have been hunting around on the web for the last couple of days, but have not yet been able to find a solution.

Windows Audio service has been started successfully, and the hardware appears to be functioning correctly, it's just that SP3 with embedded audio doesn't seem to want to play nicely!

It's really weird, and I can't tell if it stems from being the fact that I've migrated the PC from an old, dead shuttle, whether it's SP3 or whether it's XP Home

Any ideas about what might have gone wrong?
Next step I think will be to roll-back SP3, but most have said to do a complete reinstall, and I really can't be bothered!

    Cheers

    Scott

erm, this happened to one of my friends on a tosheba satellite l30 laptop about 2 days ago, except sp3 deleted every single driver on the system

in the end i had to trawel the web to find drivers for it, but a reinstallation of the drivers worked and shes up and running again now

hope that it works for you

thanks for that - makes me guess that a single driver may be missing
suspect I'll have to reinstall then.

Re: Weird AC'97 post SP3 problem

nope - didn't work, all drivers are present and correct
wonder if it's some of these new vista-type features they've added

I've got a spare soundcard at work so will see if that solves it
