What antivirus are you running? I've just had a quick look and it seems that pretty much all the popular ones should be able to deal with this.

Try a few of the various online scanners available?

May I also suggest you download/install run two of my personal favourite programs: CCleaner and Baku

Add a background of your own choosing

    ... increase my startup time...
Check your 'Startup' folder, and remove anything you don't need to run at startup.
    Defrag your system.

Or... as a last resort... reformat/einstall Windows.

As for System Restore: IIRC, it can be found in Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Restore?

Re: Xp Antivirus 2008 virus aftermath

Have you tried starting in safe mode? If you have and everything seems fine then the problem is in your profile being loaded up by windows.

In normal windows do you mean when it boots up all you get is a plain white desktop with nothing? no icons, no start button etc? Can you get task manager up (ctrl+shift+esc) are there any processes running that look odd? If you have no icons and no start bar you can start explorer from the run command in task manager.

Alternatively if you have access to another computer ensure you have an upto date anti virus installed and anti spyware software. connect the infected drive into the other PC and rescan for everything.

Use adaware, spybot, superantispyware and I'm sure there are also others.

Re: Xp Antivirus 2008 virus aftermath

Yes I appreciate that you have those problems, but what you have done is remove part of the virus and not all of it. The chances are that the reason that you desktop is as it is and you cant change it is because you have removed part of the problem but not all of it. So the reason I was pointing to that post and sorry I should have been more clear was for you to run a scan on your system using the recommended anti virus Avira and also the Spyware Doctor.
The reason for this is usually the virus you have is downloaded by the Zlob Trojan infection which is usually installed when you are trying to install codecs to watch movie clips. Now this is not to say that you have this particular trojan as you may not however experiance with removal of that virus on customer machines teaches me that usually there is more than one virus associated with that
I suggest that you download the free version of Avira from www.free-av.com or you can get a 3 month free trial of its premium suite here https://license.avira.com/en/promoti...b6eh8cmw6a101r
and also google for googlepack and download the free version of spyware doctor and run it.
Make sure that when you download and install avira that you go str8 into settings and you set it to scan all files on a manual scan and scan all archives, also switch heuristics up to full for best protection.

With regards to the white background that sounds like the active desktop crashing and could be simply because you have removed the active desktop files that the virus was using. simply try switching it off and see if that works.
I would heartily reccomend that you download the av's even if you have one that you think is working well. I repair computers for a living and 50% of my time is easily taken up removing nastys, before attempting any fixes on any part of the o/s it is worthwhile to make sure that there is nothing there that is simply undoing any fix you may be making in the form of a nasty file.
Post and let us know what you find

Edit :- One of the main things that could be causing your machine to start up very slowly is the virus may be trying to repair itself or the system is having to time out because not everything of the virus has been removed.

Goto run on the start bar and type in msconfig then deselect everything from starting except your av. and reboot. You can always switch on things again later and it is safe to stop everything in this list, it simply stops programs from starting so dont be alarmed if your icons on the right hand side of your screen dont appear as this si what you have stopped from loading.
Now compare your load times and if they are significantly different then it is something in this list that is causing it.
    then google is your friend
