    Usb device not recognized

    Hello all,
I've just bought a Kingston DataTraveler 100 8 gig USB stick, and can't get it to work. Every time I connect it, the PC shouts 'USB device not recognized', with the balloon popping up again and again. Other USB sticks, my mp3 player, printer all connect and work fine and dandy. This morning the thing connected and was recognized, I started copying files onto it and left, and when I came back the balloon "USB device not recognized" flashed up again while the files were being copied onto it, and since it wouldn't work.

The USB controller driver update doesn't give any newer drivers.

The machine is and old Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop, running Win XP with SP2. Could it be the age of the PC? Since the USB stick was finely recognised on an Dell XPS 1530.

Thanks in advance for all your suggestions.

    Re: Usb device not recognized

Only speculation. but it might be the size of the drive and age of the machine that is the problem.

You would need to experiment a bit - perhaps reformatting the USB stick into a 4Gb and two 2Gb partions and see if they work - although generally there is no reason to partiion a USB stick and some USB sticks don't like it at all - so it is at your risk!

Otherwise try it with a lower capacity device.

    Re: Usb device not recognized

Hmm, the strangest thing is, the thing worked 2 times already, I've successfully uploaded more than a gig of data onto it. And the last time, it was recognized, and almost instantly the balloon with the 'USB device not recognized' popped up again. Complete mistery.

Will try to use some other 8 gig USB drive, just to check.
