    EEE 901 - Linux -> XP?

    I'm planning on buying myself an EEE 901, but I was torn between the Linux or XP versions. The Linux version has 8GB more space, but the XP version has...well XP. Anyway, how easy/possible is it to install XP onto the Linux version, and possibly shrink it using nLite? Is the XP that comes preinstalled on the other version just a run of the mill XP SP2, or is it a shrunk down version?

    I have found this guide, but does anyone know of any other, possibly better one?
    http://www.eeeguides.com/2007/11/ins...usb-thumb.html

    I'm looking at purchasing it from here:
    http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Asus_...06/version.asp
    Anyone know of it cheaper anywhere else?

    And also getting an 8/16GB SDHC card for more space...

    it's easily done - as long as you have a USB CD drive, and a retail XP license

    So one other question...

    How are Transcend for SDHC cards? I can get a 16GB SDHC Transcend, or an 8GB Kingston...I was leaning towards the Kingston as I know that their quality will be good, but I was hoping to be able to get the extra storage...

    Do you need XP? I think I would get the Linux version - more memory - and see how I got on with that - we browsing e mail and open office will do a lot. mp3 support on Linux is good, as is video. I'd only worry about installing XP if there was an absolute 'must have' Windows application.

    (But I do post as a bit of a Linux fanboy )

    Re: EEE 901 - Linux -> XP?

    I had never heard of transcend - but took a punt on one for my eee701 - been fine so far...

    I normally use XP for work - but have successfully created Word-compatible .docs; xls- compatible spreadsheets; and powerpoint compatible presentations and displayed them in professional meetings (on projectors).

    no one noticed it was Linux - too busy commenting on how neat (and small) the eee was

    Re: EEE 901 - Linux -> XP?

    Kinda got cold feet with laptopsdirect.co.uk - too many negative reviews!
    Does anyone else know where the black (i guess white would do), linux version is availible for ~£299 (the price of the XP one most places) and not £360 like on amazon...?

    EDIT:
    Found it for £299 on Amazon, from Amazon, unlike the £360 one I found on Amazon sold by some random shop...

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Asus-901-BK0...ef=pd_sbs_ce_1

    EDIT 2:
    How do you do the fancy url linky thing? As in where you type, I dunno say 'click here' and then the linky goes to the site?

    Re: EEE 901 - Linux -> XP?

    You could try Ebuyer, but only showing 1 in stock at the moment.

    As to the linking, once you've inserted the link change the text between the ] and [ brackets in the generated text. It should be automatically selected when you've clicked OK.
    If you can't keep up, stick with reality...

    Re: EEE 901 - Linux -> XP?

    I got my white Linux 20G EEE 901 from Clove. Used them before (small, friendly & professional).

    really impressed so for went for 3 days on standby (with only 2-3 hrs total on time) whilst I was away last week.
    Nice screen & keyboard (I have comparatively small hands).
    Looks good - perhaps not quite as a good as a Macbook air...

    from my perspective the extra speed and screen size give me exactly what I want as trade off between, weight perfomance, readability and battery life.

    Once I have VPN into the office sorted the others get pensioned off...
