DVD writer won't read DVDs - not the usual problem !

    So see here...http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

Tried doing that BUT problem is my registry does NOT have those "upperfilter" and "lowerfilter" options. It just says
    Default
    Class
    ClassDesc
ETC ETC - but it has no mention of upperfilter etc

I am running vista x64 - annoying why the hell can't things just work - it really is irritating. And obviously i cannot find any drivers for my samsung dvd writer which is a SH-s223

    Any suggestions?
    Thanks guys

Re: DVD writer won't read DVDs - not the usual problem !

My old games work fine - Call of Duty original is starting up great. Crysis and CnC 3 worked fine earlier today. Now it wont read the DVDs at all

Call of Duty is a CD
The new games are DVDs does this have something to do with it

... Just tried to play a DVD movie on it - it rejected it and said please insert a CD/DVD - therefore it would appear CDs run okay but DVDs are a no no...

Looks as if Windows is not recognising it as a DVD player. You could try d-installing it and then re-installing. There is a support site here for Samsung which may be of use..

Downloaded their driver... apparently its not compatible with x64 edition hence why the exe file opens and just closes

Hmm... should I just wipe the drivers anyway and see what happens. Apparently you shouldn't need user drivers for a DVD drive?

If i write click on the drive and go into properties etc it eventually says the "Value" is CD-ROM drive - not DVD... hmm

Also the devide isnt described as Samsung... its TSSTCorp

yup TSSTcorp is right, it stands for toshiba samsung (something) tecnology, i'm sure a google will bring it up

and no, you don't need additional drivers for a DVD drive, just let windows sort it out

the easiest way is to connect the drive to a different SATA/IDE port if available...

If i wasnt to do the latter, could I just right click my D drive properties etc etc and then go into the TSST and then click uninstall.. will that remove the drivers. Then restart the system and windows should sort it?

    Thanks guys

If you have another computer to test it could identify if your DVD read head is dead.

CD and DVD read heads are separate, its a common reason if for some reason you can read one but not the other, funny thing is its usually the DVD reader dying first.

edit - doesn't really matter if something is new, with computer parts they are all susceptible to premature deaths.
