Hi
Does anyone know how to make the computer go to sleep/hibernate when the computer is logged off.
I know you can adjust the setting in the power options but this only works when the computer is logged in.
This is using Win xp pro
thanks

Have you looked in the BIOS settings - there may be some power saving settings there!
Surely a more effective power saving measure is to just turn the machine off if no one is logged into the machine.
if not then the login screen, you can select options, press the shut down button and from there there is an option to send the machine to sleep anyway. However as far as an auto sleep option goes, I would just suggest turning the machine off when you stop using it.
Or lock the machine instead of logging off if you all are administrators and that way it will allow others to use it, which as well as log you off when they go on, would also keep the automatic settings active.
1. Log on as an administrator, and set up power management as you see fit
2. Each user's power management settings live in (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\PowerCfg). Open regedit to here, and export the whole key to a file.
4. Open the file in notepad, and replace every instance of 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\' with 'HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\'
5. Delete the key 'HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\PowerCfg', and import the .reg file.
6. Reboot.
thanks will try that,
the reason i dont turn the comp of every night, is that i have been told that the on-off action every day could damage the hardrives and other comopnents. not sure if thats true? but dont really want to risk it.

Hi, I would agree it's best to shut down your system rather than let it go into sleep/hibernate. In our experience, sleep/hibernate has caused more OS problems than it's worth.
