Vista install issues on new built

    Hi all,

    Some advice please.

    New build.

    Asus p5q3
    Intel Q9550
4gb OCZ 1333 Platinum (only part not from scan.. Has now been replaced with 4GB Crucial Ballistix)
    Power Color 4870x2

Build went fine.. All idle temps great Thanks to freezer pro cooler!

Installing Vista 64bit Home Premium is just a no go.

When expanding files.. BSOD Everytime.. IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL

After research looked like a memory issue and found many posts relating to OCZ and this asus board.. so sent it back (Overclockers) and re orderd Crucial Ballastix direct from crucial.. but same issue on this memory..

Have tested with another video card..

Have tried 32 bit vista.. have dropped memory down to 2gig.. changed slots on memory..

    Tried another hard drive.

Tried home premium 64bit retail media.

Entered memory timings manually rahter than auto.

Have disabled every thing on the motherboard including express gate.. (Only thing not disabled IDE for dvd rom and usb for keyboard)

    But still no go..

Im at the stage of returning the main board.. the 7 day return thing is up today! so wondering what the process is for this and how long it takes.. woudl i recieve a new board? or am i able to go with another paying the difference if neccessory?

With the delays due to stock in the first place its nearly a month since i ordered not scans fault i know.. i just need the system up and running asap old one gave up 3 months ago..

Does your install media have SP1 integrated? Some hardware configs had issues installing with 4Gib RAM installed (I know, you said you tried with 2 but it's worth a shot) prior to SP1.

Edit - also another thing you haven't mentioned - have you tried manually entering the voltage for the RAM?

I'd have to check to be sure.. issue is im not home till 9pm tonight.. and if im to return the board. then if im correct this about the 7 days.. i need to get the rma for it today

    which psu do you have?

also try running memtest86 off a usb pen drive or similar, unlikely to be faulty ram twice in a row but it's very handy for verifying the memory is ok.

1000W Zalman ZM1000-HP Dual Heatpipe Cooled Modular PSU + 80% Eff

I would post a link but you need 5 or more posts before you can post url

Not done mem test yet.. i did try the util as part of vista install on the repair screen but that failed.. not the memory but the tool iteslf

But as you say this is the second lot of memory now so chances are very slim..

Doesn't look good i'm afraid it seems to have lots of stability issues. I would RMA the motherboard and choose a different one.

I was kinda getting to that assumption.. but the main board.. i think we are all in agreed the last thing you honstly want to RMA and replace is the main board what a hassle...

Any thoughts on what i should replace it with..?

I have always been an asus person to be honest but im thinking its time to explore some other manufactures.. such a shame i loved that quick boot express gate web access stuff! that worked fine out the box until i disabled it to see if that was the issue..

Re: Vista install issues on new built

Ok called up got RMA details coming through on email..

Taken the refund option.. worry is tho if no fault found then 35 quid charge? what happens then do i get the main board back? because its not going to be any use to me as i cant do anything with it??? or after paying the 35quid am i still able to obtain a refund?

soz forgot to ask these questions when on the phone..

    Cheers Andy

    Hi,

I have an Asus Rampage Formula Board but this is a DDR2 board and i am guessing that you have DDR3.

I have been drifting around with mobo's but now am firmly with Asus as they just seem to do everything just that little bit better than the others. Not that I am nocking anyone else and I really dont think that Asus are perfect however at the moment my opinion is that you cant go wrong with an Asus board.

When I first set up the Rampage formula on my comp, it needed the Ram setting in the bios. However it has been absolutly sublime afterwards.

Currently use my pc as a media centre for the whole house supporting 2 xboxes and 2 PC's as well as use it for anything from surfing through to gaming and it never has had any problems with all happening at once. Only nark I have is that it will only have 1 pci slot when i add my second 4870 card.

    .
Absolutely, i've spent ages trying to get my new pc build to work and it seems that the motherboard is the likely suspect, expecting the replacement today fingers crossed that resolves the problem.!

Can't comment on what to replace it with i'm afraid as I haven't looked into that area in detail, I am putting together a AMD HTPC at the moment.

I can see why your reluctant to change mobo though, that Express Gate does look fantastic.

Re: Vista install issues on new built

    Just thought id report back.

p5q3 has been boxed and dropped off at citylink to be returned. (just waiting on refund from scan now)

Being that this build has gone on for to long now! i ordered a p5e3 so upgraded from the p45 to x48 chipset a little more cost but did not want to chance the same chipset again.

Fitted new mobo today, vista 64 straight install no worrys! all windows update done. running smooth!

Grid looks amazing! maxed out on every setting 1440x900 on the 4870x2 yea i know 1440x900 is nothing for this card! waiting on TV for the bedroom. however i did run UT3 on the tv in the lounge right before the wife booted me out for eastenders! 1920x1080 full settings no worrys! this is a great card!

    Cheers guys
