    Dvd rom has stopped working

    Hi,

So... I installed Norton Partition Magic, so I could partition and format my external hard drive. The process resulted in the creation of a new partition which bumped my DVD rom's drive letters along by 1. Since then, my Samsung DVD rom will not work, when I try I get the 'please insert disk' message.

Oddly, my dvd burner still works fine.

Does anyone know what could be the problem, or rather, how to fix it? I've tried uninstalling it from device manager and restarting, but that hasn't helped. It can't be a loose wire because the problem only started after Partition Magic bumped the drive letters along.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi

Do you have system restore turned on? If so, try rolling back to before the install.

Can you try the drive in another computer?

Have you tried unplugging the external hard drive to see if that makes any difference?

If all else fails... it might be worth trying this suggestion - which I found on another forum, and saved to a text doc for future reference:

    3. Right click on "Class", click "Export"; please name the file as "RegBackup" (without quotation marks) and then save it to the C:\ drive as a backup.

Note: In case we need to undo the modification, we can double click this RegBackup.reg file to restore the registry key.

    4. Highlight this key, on the right pane, check if the "Upperfilters" and "Lowerfilters" values are present. If so, please right click on the values and select "Delete" to remove them.

After deleting filter drivers, please reload the drivers.

    Reinstall driver:

    1. Click "Start", in the Start Search box type "devmgmt.msc" and press "Enter".
    2. Expand "DVD/CDROM Drives".
    3. Right click the listed DVD/CD-ROM, and click "Uninstall". Please uninstall all devices.
    4. Restart the computer.

The drivers will be loaded automatically.

Re: Dvd rom has stopped working

Haven't got the latest version of Partition Magic, but it used to come with a DriveMapper utility. Which checks for references to an old drive letter and maps them to a new one. If you use the previous posters advice to go back to an old restore point this tool might help in future - I just hope it's still included. It's a wizard-style utility, used to be located on the Tools Menu under DriveMapper.

    Good Luck!

Re: Dvd rom has stopped working

    Hi there,

Go to computer management in admin tools under the control panel and try changing the drive letters of your external drive and DVD so the DVD is the same letter it was, sounds like things in the registry are trying to look for the DVD on that letter, so changing it back might sort the problem, not sure what effect moving the external's letter may have though, if theres nothing actually installed on it then it should be fine.

Re: Dvd rom has stopped working

    Many thanks for the replies.

I'm not sure if a rollback would work, as that would undo the original partition stuff I did, all back to square one?

I should have added that I have changed the dvd rom, and dvd burner drive letters back to what they were before, but no luck.

I'm looking at the drivemapper tool, but I can't see anything with it to help, done too many re-arranging of letters I think.

Last resort may be the regedit method, though I'm always scared to mess with the registry.

    Why can't things just work!?

Thanks again for the advice so far.
