    Dvd drive disappeared...

I put on my computer tonight to watch some Lost...and for some reason my dvd drive has disappeared. I put a disk in, green light flashes, it spins up, but nothing on my computer. It just doesn't seem to be recognised any more. I reseated all the cables and such.

I've done everything I can think of but still it isn't being recognised.

Anyone know what could be the problem, and therefore the solution?

    Thanks hex.

As a last resort (didn't think it would work), I did system restore and it's working again. Weird?

    Re: Dvd drive disappeared...

I had this happen the other day. I was getting a code 38 (i think) in device manager, the device drivers are corrupted or something similar. I had to remove the upper and lower filters on the DVD drive in regedit to get mine working again. Here is a link to Microsoft article on a similar problem, the advanced troubleshooting steps list the procedures to remove the upper and lower filters entries. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/EN-US/

    Re: Dvd drive disappeared...

Failing that, it's very common with un-original DVD's and some disc drives in Windows Vista. Solution being buy a different DVD drive. If memory serves me it was NEC drives that did this.
    Moo.

    Re: Dvd drive disappeared...

    Bumpity bump.

Same thing happened again. I was in the middle of watching Lost, suddenly everything froze and I had to reboot. When I got back, dvd drive was missing again . It's not listed in the device manager...basically the same as what happened last time. For some reason none of my restore points are working, so I can't even do that to fix it.

Light is on, and it ejects so I can't see it being a hardware issue. Don't know how I would check if the driver is up to date as I can't access it in device manager. Registry issue maybe?
