    NAS Problem.

    Good Day All,

So I was transferring to my lovely new IB-NAS-4220 . I decided to extract some stuff from some rars over the network on the NAS (not so clever it appears). It got to a certain percent then just died on me (the extraction process that is). I could still access the NAS but couldn't delete the file it partially extracted. So I went to turn it off and on again. Once it came back on it wouldn't work (well it wouldn't connect to the network.) It just started running the hard drives, but no access.

I opened the NAS up and unplugged both hard drives to see if I could access the configuration page (http://nas / http//local ip). This didn't work. So I tried with just the one hard drive. That worked. Plugged the second one in, dead again. Odd thing is the files were on the first hard drive (the one that worked).

What I plan to try when I get home is:

    - Use the second HD on the first sata port.
    - External power supply for the HD.
    - Different SATA cables.
    - Boot the hard drive in linux (if it works) backup and reformat. (ext2)
    - As the NAS has usb ports try that HD in an external caddy.

I appreciate, seeing I don't actually know if the HD is dead yet, that the possibilities are endless as to what the problem is. Nevertheless I thought I'd post here just in case someone suggests something that may help once I've gone through the above.

    Re: NAS Problem.

    Okay I'm confused now.

    Here's my resaults:

    - Put second HD in a linux comp (took agaes to mount). Once mounted backed up and formated.
Once it was formated it mounted and unmounted normaly in linux. (so not the HD)

    - Tried different cables, no difference.

    - Tried the first HD (working one) in the second port, worked fine. (so not the sata ports, or w/e they're called)

I'm at a bit of a loss, without buying a 3rd HD I'm thinking its a combination of the NAS and the HD... but it worked before. Any ideas?

    Edit:

I also have a usb to sata cable, using the NAS's power supply I plugged it into the nas through the usb port and that worked fine....

    Re: NAS Problem.

Okay just some more info, in case someone can shed some light.

    - I've ran the NAS's scan disk and is said it has resolved a problem.
    - I've reformatted using the NAS itself.
    - The NAS now turns on / off with the second hard drive in.
    - The NAS now detects the hard drive.
    - The NAS doesn't mount the hard drive... feel as if I'm almost there.

    Any ideas?

    Re: NAS Problem.

Could be a power supply problem, component on the way out so it isn't delivering enough power to reliably operate the two drives together. I'd still be a tad wary of that second HD though.
