Rampage II Extreme motherboard - Dead?

    Hi

I finally bought the last piece of my i7 system a 920 DO cpu

Put all the pieces together the MB lights up - I pressed the power button and nothing. Not even the psu fires up. I've tried swapping around the ram (reducing it down to one stick)

I've even piece by piece taking out the hard drive, dvd drive, video card, ram and even the CPU.
    But still nothing

I have checked the PSU and it's fine - I have also tried another PSU - but still no joy.

The power connections on the MB seem OK with no damage that I can see

Reading the instruction manual the on board power switch should blink 4 times before you should press it (mine doesn't blink)
So it looks to me that the MB is dead

I bought from ebay - As such I can't RMA direct with Asus and will have to go Creative Computing. Which will be very long process

Any help will be much appreciated

    Many thanks

    RON

Re: Rampage II Extreme motherboard - Dead?

I don't have any experience with this board unfortunately, but I have had two ASUS boards go on me before! So it wouldn't be unheard of.

If there are no lights on the board where there should be lights, and the PSU works fine... I would be of the same opinion as you - the motherboard is faulty.

    Hi

I agree with you - It's now boxed up ready to be sent of to Asus via Creative Computing

    Many thanks

Erm, silly question, and I don't mean to insult, but "not even the power supply turns on"... did you turn on/plug in the power supply?

I know, how could I think such a thing? But sometimes when building a computer I get overexcited and miss such an important part of the process. It is... embrassing when it happens.

Re: Rampage II Extreme motherboard - Dead?

If the board is lit, then there's obviously power going into the PSU.

Try resetting the CMOS, the board might have silly high clock settings. But it could be a fried/faulty mainboard. You'll always get chancers selling damaged goods on eBay, they'll probably give you a whole load of hassle, claim it was damaged in transit or by you etc. That's why I never buy goods which are still in retail from eBay. Particularly something this new and powerful.

Oh, and make sure you use both ATX+12v connectors near the CPU, the board wont boot without it, if your PSU doesn't have one, get one which does. Cheap, or underpowered PSUs will probably result in a failed boot also.

    Hi

You have me there - I've used the 24pin 24v connector and a 8pin 12v and thats it, is there another one I should be using

The PSU is a 1200 Thermaltake toughpower which looks like it has two captive 8pin 12v connectors - should I be using both of these somewhere on the board (I can't see where the 2nd would go).
I'd love you to say yep and for it to be all OK (even if it does make me feel like an idiot).

I'm off to download the MB manual now

    Many thanks

Re: Rampage II Extreme motherboard - Dead?

PSU and connections will be fine then. Try the CMOS reset switch, if that doesn't work then it's likely that the motherboard is a dud.

Re: Rampage II Extreme motherboard - Dead?

I would as a final test, build a bare system on one of the anti static sleeves, resting the motherboard upon it and see if it fires up just to ensure that nothing on the case is for some reason shorting the board.

It sounds very much like eBay strikes again though. As stated with the other chaps on here, I would advise against any PC component purchases on eBay, let alone the latest ones...
