Cutting less than 1 picofarad caps

I am tasked with producing less than 1 picofarad caps using a DAD320 dicing saw and 25 mill 91.2 dk NGK substrate. Mostly I can hold a one per cent tolerance, but one product is...touchy, shall we say? I'd dearly love to narrow the range if possable. I know I'm pushing the limets here, but still I think with a saw that holds 6 microns I should be able to come a little closer to the ideal. The spindle speed is set at 30k and I have the table speed at .050/sec. The water is cold and I have no indication of blade issues. Measuring every cap isn't in the cards. but the sample size (within reason) is my call. We're a small shop making ceramic filters, and this one is in the 1.9 Gig range.

    Any ideas?

So 32 people looked at this and nobody knows what I'm talking about? I gotta admit it's pretty esoteric. Well, at least I tried.

Re: Cutting less than 1 picofarad caps

More like <1p if you buy from somewhere like Farnell. I can't see the point in doing this unless it was for some sort of project or something - they would be very expensive compared to commercially available ones so I couldn't see many people buying them if they are intended for sale.

Re: Cutting less than 1 picofarad caps

Trying to make your own 1pF cap is not only expensive, it's practically impossible without the correct equipment. So what should be <1p becomes >>>>>1p, depending on how much of your time and effort you squander in the futile attempt before you realise this is stupid and buy them instead.

Re: Cutting less than 1 picofarad caps

Very odd thing to want to do. The only thing is that the OP has mentioned 1% tolerance which he wants to improve upon. That is a precision capacitor as most commercial ones are 10% or 20%.

Can't imagine why he needs such small, precise capacitors though - perhaps if he posted with the reason it might mek more sense.

    Cheers,

    Nigel
