    Windows 7 x64 privileges... huh?

Anyone got any ideas as to what basic, silly or stupid mistake I've made which a) prevents ATI Catalyst (any version from 9.10 on) installing, b) seems to stop the Intel TRIM thing in the Toolbox working yet c) allows me to install/use most other things (Office 03, Paint Shop Pro X2, games, Winamp, etc).

The Catalyst installer (9.10, 9.11 and 9.12; haven't bothered trying 10.1 yet) tells me I don't have the required priviliges. The Intel toolbox seems unable to write to the drive and any attempt at TRIM results in "Failed" and a ~3GB file in the drive root.

I have done nothing, that I know of, to shaft the permissions and have tried turning UAC off (no difference), enabling the 'proper' Admin user (no difference) and even creating a new user with full admin permission (no difference). I've also run full scans with MSSE and Spybot.

It does, however, seem to have occured after uninstalling Kasperky IS 2010...
My next step is to put KIS2010 back then, if needs be, a reinstall but does anyone have any other ideas first?

Start turning on options in the local security policy to monitor privilege use, then check the security log in the event viewer.

I've seen this on Win 7 when you move favorites to a networked drive - if it's this, there will be errors in event viewer.

I know the ATI installer suffers from it, as does the Office 2007 installer. Even some basic MSI installers throw up an error.

I've not done any real digging yet on the subject, so there may be an easy solution, but if you've moved your favorites, try relocating them to your C:\users\%username% folder and then logging off and on again.

Re: Windows 7 x64 privileges... huh?

Duly noted but I haven't moved any folder locations... I might just admit defeat (I'm not entirely sure what I should be looking for in the event viewer) and re-install Win7. Another reason I'm thinking of this approach is that I can't get the AHCI drivers to work properly (even following the MS KB instructions) following installation in IDE - and the darn Intel Toolbox doesn't work.

    Thanks for the replies though.
