Well, we have a pass on it and only my mum uses it for email at the moment.
I don't know what just happened, maybe my special jumper I just put on has magic powers or maybe me moving the arial from the back of the monitor to the side and bam, the lag is gone. Strange but I just played lagless for half an hour. hmmmm....
Have you had any adverse weather that may have affected your phone line? Your router stats (depending on the router) may show if you are losing packets. But as Zak (and others) said, start by eliminating the things that are under your control - use ethernet cable, replace your ADSL filter(s) or unplug any other device on the 'phone line. If you have one of the newer type BT socket with a removeable faceplate, try plugging your router directly into the master socket behind the faceplate.

999 lag outs I would put it down to the wifi, I used to have this problem with trying to get wifi to work through 1 floor and 1 steel support beam.
wifi is subject to electronic interference too, it could be that your neighbour has decided to use wifi too, so try changing the channel to something not used by any neighbouring wifi networks.
Weather has been ok but it's glasgow, it's wet !
I have a simple line splitter from the plug to the router and phone. How do is see if my router is losing packets??
Depends on the router, but if it has a web interface, there may be a report page (status, or stats) that will give you the info. It should also report line stats (attenuation and S/N ratio)
A simple splitter (if that treally is what you have) is not a good idea - well worth investing in a good quality ADSL filter for every phone connected to the line. Expect to pay around £5-£6 for a good one. Otherwise anyone picking up the phone will trash your broadband connection (as well as getting background noise on the phone call)

I think I have a filter, but i can't be sure. Certainly have never had problems with backgroud phone noise or connection interrution due to phone being answered.
10m ethernet cable = no lag at all. .
Just a weird FYI, if it's been getting wet then cold, the water can get into your telephone lines (against the side of your house, or in the ground), and freeze. Basically, causing massive issues with DSL/56k and general phone calls. Then when it would get warm again, it'd turn back to water and all would be somewhat swell.
