    Really weird DNS problem

A friend just bought a new Sony Vaio (windows 7) which I set up for him but I cannot get it to reliably connect to the internet. He's with AOL and has a Thomson Speedtouch 585. He has 2 other computers, a laptop and a desktop both with Windows XP, and they both connect to the internet with no issues.
The problem seems to be related to the Speedtouch (or AOL software) changing the DNS setting. The primary DNS value in network properties, for all 3 machines is 10.0.0.138 and this doesn't seem to cause a problem for the two XP machines. If I change this to either 'Obtain the DNS server automiatcally' or manually enter say the valuse for OpenDNS on the windows 7 machine then I can get on the internet. Unfortunately after a couple of hours the bloomin thing goes and resets itself to the DNS being 10.0.0.138 and it's back to not being able to get onto the internet.

Anyone any ideas how I resolve this?

    Re: Really weird DNS problem

I assume that 10.0.0.138 is the router IP?

can you do an nslookup www.bbc.co.uk on both a Windows XP and Windows 7 box and post the results?

That's the odd bit, the lan address of router is 192.168.1.254. but it looks like the router is acting as a proxy. I was thinking if I assign a static IP address AND put the OpenDNS address's in for primary and secondary DNS that may well stop the dhcp server serving out that 10 address as the primary dns and that might fix the problem (not at the machine at the moment).
