BIOS detects all HDDs Windows doesn't

Hi,

I'm running an HP Prolient ML115 and am having some drive issues:

SATA ports 1 & 2 work just fine in both BIOS and windows (in mirrored RAID), however SATA ports 3 & 4 are visable in BIOS but invisible in Vista (64)...

I'm using the latest appropriate nforce drivers.

I had some NVSTOR bsods when I moved from linux to Windows, but eventually a clean install went through and I've had no further problems.

Any ideas why?

they appear to, but the only option it gives me is to delete the volume...

You had linux on it before? Use disk management to delete an recreate the partitions. It can be confusing as sometimes windows gives them a drive letter, but will not allow format or use if the hace linux on them.

they were in a thecus nas box before, but that's decided to stop working (afaik)...

each has 3 partitions, you're suggesting removing the partitions recreating one?

I'm incredibly anxious not to lose the data.

They are not going to be readable under windows, as it does not understand the format. Not sure what thecus uses but i believe its linux based. So a linux system might be able to read them. A linux live disk like knoppix will show you if they are readable under linux, and allow you to get he data off, without installing linux.

Thesus is standard EXT3 by default (unless things have changed). ZFS and XFT can be used, but you normally have to change to these (again, IIRC, it's been a while).

EXT should be readable by any live distro once mounted. Of course, if you were using RAID and the drive wasn't operating in a standard read / write single fashion, things get a bit more complex.

Best bet is to try the live distro first and see what you can see, if anything and take it from there

fs-driver allowed me to label the partitions which displayed them in explorer, but says they need formatting...

Try looking in /media

ls /media

mount /media/whatever

Also capture dmesg and post the output..... Should be able to tell you more from there.

Were the disk in any kind of raid configuration? raid 5, mirror, stripped, concatenated? If they were the fs-driver will not be able tor read them as I will not know how to join the together.

Question to the floor does the thecus use lvm or raidtab (md device) I am assuming its software raid based. Anyone know the default stripe size if its md based?

Yes they were mirrored

Bloody Thecus, always thought it would be a drive that went first in a NAS, not the hardware.

This is one of those perfect "RAID ain't backup" threads.

I've heard of RAID 1 problems before when trying to read the data on standard SATA. You might end up having to get another Thecus box to get your data back if you're really unlucky... I have no idea how the RAID works inside those things though.
