Core 2 Duo Overheating

Hi all,

Just turned my computer on and apparently my E6750 is overheating. BIOS reports that it idles at 82 on start up and then the whole lot just switches itself off. I've cleaned the heat sink from dust (there wasn't alot) and tried improving the airflow but as expected it didn't work.

Any thoughts on this? I've never had something like this before. The rest of my specs are the the left

Update: Just put some new thermal paste on and everything seems fine now. Didn't know it could have that much of an effect!

Faulty temp sensor?

Have you tried putting a desk fan directly blowing on the motherboard to see if you can keep the pc on long enough to touch the heatsink as a check? Or use another temp sensor?

How would I go about using another temp sensor? Aren't the sensors on-chip?

Edit: All other temps are normal.

Remove the heatsink and put it back on with new thermal paste. It's probably come loose.

Yeah I was thinking that the thermal paste may have degraded. Its been on for a few years and I've taken the heat sink off once or twice to clean it.

I don't mean you should do it for the thermal paste, I mean the heatsink is probably not secured properly, not giving full contact. You shouldn't reuse thermal paste, which is why I said new (The old tube of paste should be fine).

Make sure the plastic pins click loudly into place and press diagonal opposites at the same time.

Yeah its all secured in place. I've run out of paste so I guess I might get some more
