Screen Flickers and screen goes black sometimes

    Hi all,

I recently built my own computer ( 3 weeks ago to be precise). I bought a Viewsonic VX2260WM with my build. With my build I have a Sapphire Ati Radeon HD 5830 graphics card. The problem that I get is sometimes the screen flickers and then a few minutes later the screen goes black ( with very faint wavy vertical lines across the screen ). I know its not the screen even though I had it replaced because I have connected my Xbox 360 to the monitor, and it never flickers or goes into black screen. The problem always happens though when I play Modern Warfare 2 on PC. I uninstalled everything to do with ATI on the pc, and reinstalled everything again with the latest drivers. Am I right to assume that I have a faulty graphics card? Maybe this problem can be fixed but I don't know how. Any ideas?

Edit - The screen is not exactly black, its like a dark green colour with horizontal lines across it.

I remember something a while back about ATi drivers causing the grey screens of death and every so often people would lose their monitor etc. Thought it was fixed with a recent driver. Not to sure, this ATi card I have is the first one I've owned. Not come across the issue myself. If the card is in warranty it might be worth testing in someone else's PC to see if they get the same issue. If so then RMA it

Yeap, that sounds like a serious problem with the graphics card rather than the monitor. Try as Grey M@a says to reproduce the problem in another machine.

Re: Screen Flickers and screen goes black sometimes

Ok, so I sent the graphics card back to the place where I bought it from and they tested it with no errors! I also put in a different graphics card into my computer and there were no black screens or green screens, and I could play modern warfare 2 with no problems! What could be my problem????

The graphics card I put into my system did not require me to plug in a power lead, but my ati 5830 does require a power lead.

what makes the power supply, if its from the pound shop it may be the problem

if you load furmark does it crap out, if it does ask the shop to test with that to confirm it.

Re: Screen Flickers and screen goes black sometimes

This is what they had to say, " The graphics card passes all tests with no issues. The tests run are, Crysis WarHead, Furmark, 3Dmark Vantage, Farcry, World in conflict, MSI Kombuster, Resident Evil Benchmark, ATI Mecha, ATI Ladybug, Streetfighter Benchmark and heaven benchmark tool, these were all tested at 1920 x 1200 resolution running maximum settings, tested on DX9, DX10 AND DX11 where applicable, there was no issues apparent."

They did not mention how long this all lasted, but it was definitely all within a day because I got emails from them on one day saying they received it and that they will test it straight away. Then I got an email back from them the next day saying that the tests where run and I will be receiving the graphics card back within the next two days.

I will personally run Furmark later on, on my system specs. I have noticed that the problem happens more often when the computer has been on for a long time, a long time being 7 or 8 hours.

    I have a 650W Corsair CMPSU-650TX, single 12V rail.

Could you not try some older drivers?
