Possible to upgrade Advent 6552 graphics card?

    Hi everyone,
I've just bought a cheap Advent 6552 laptop from ebay, which is perfectly fine, but as the graphics card is the only weakness of the laptop, I wondered if it's possible to bypass the integrated the card on the motherboard and install another graphics card somehow.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Christian.

    Hey, thanks for the reply.
I've just come across a postr in the digitalspy forums though...

    http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/s...d.php?t=657461

The member 'darktangent' posts: "I have the advent 6552 and it holds up pritty well and u can always get parts if u want to upgrade it like IE I installed a graphics card so that I was not useing the intergrated intel one which I just disabled in the bios."

Is it possible that they're just getting confused with an Advent desktop pc that they own or that it is indeed possible to upgrade the graphics card somehow?

Re: Possible to upgrade Advent 6552 graphics card?

Unless the notebook has an MXM module or something similar you won't be able to replace the graphics card. Not all notebooks use MXM modules and many have the graphics chip soldered onto the motherboard. Even then these modules are not very easy to get hold off and tend to be expensive. Also there are different types of MXM modules too which are not compatible with all notebooks. Another factor is how much power the graphics card module consumes and whether your notebook can actually run it and also whether the graphics card cooling is sufficient.

Ebay is probably the best place to check for these modules IMHO.

Re: Possible to upgrade Advent 6552 graphics card?

As the laptop uses an integrated Intel graphics solution I doubt that Advent would waste money to included the MXM interconnects.

Until a real world external expresscard graphics solution arrives it seems you just have to do your best with what you have. The Intel graphics uses shares system memory; upgrading the amount of system ram, or making sure that both slots are occupied to take advantage of Dual Channel, may increase graphics performance.
