    Using DVD Drive Crashes PC!

I've recently finished building my PC - all components are new except the DVD Drive which I brought over from my old build. I've never had problems with it but since the new build, every time I insert an audio CD my PC freezes up and have to hit the reset button to reboot.

I tried making an .iso of the disc and mounting it on a virtual drive but this also induces a freeze?!

    Any advice?

    Thanks in advance

Is it a SATA or IDE drive ? Had this issue a while ago with an IDE drive, got a SATA one (they're cheap enough) and the problem went away.

Sorry, I should have stated that it is indeed a SATA drive.

Re: Using DVD Drive Crashes PC!

    Have you tried disabling autorun?

Type default programs into the start menu, then click on autoplay and change the settings to "Take no action".

You can change it back afterwards if it makes no difference, just wondering if it's autoplay that's causing the problem.

Is it only audio discs, or do data discs do it as well?

I'd try another SATA cable too.

Check what mode that SATA port is running as in the BIOS: If it's a IDE emulation mode, change it to native SATA.

Even if I select the disc via Winamp it freezes the system up.

Re: Using DVD Drive Crashes PC!

    Hang on...

I just disabled auto-play and it seems to have fixed the problem! Winamp was set as the default player for CDs - maybe a problem with Winamp?

I always tend to deal with one issue at a time. Find out why the drive is locking the PC up first and then investigae the ISO issue after.

Re: Using DVD Drive Crashes PC!

If it's the same symptoms though, it kind of implies that they're the same issue? Either way, as long as we get to the bottom of it sooner or later
