Faulty 6850 ?

As most of you know I've built myself a new PC, all was going well untill today.

It's only really been today that I've been able to play some games on it though and have noticed that I've got a problem.

I first noticed that when playing Mafia 2 for about half an hour that my screen would go blank and after a while my whole PC would crash. Thinking it to be a driver issue I removed the drivers supplied on the CD of the MSI 6850 which I got from Scan and downloaded the latest from AMD.

Again I tried Mafia 2 and after a similar amount of time I had the same problem.

Thinking it was a problem with that game I tried GTA IV and after 35 mins or so of play time (it could have been less) it happened again.

I hit the reset button, and while I could hear the post beep I had nothing on screen. This also happened when playing Mafia 2. I've connected the monitor to the other DVI socket, but even this has not cured the problem.

Having done some research before I built my system I was sure that a 500 watt OCZ Stealth Stream PSU was more than capable of running the hardware I ordered. Whilst I don't mind buying a new PSU if it will correct my problem, I don't want to shell money out for one either if it won't.

Feeling a little bit disappointed right now, but I do have my old 4850 still so I can use that and see if I get the same result, if I don't then thats going to lead me to think that the 6850 is at fault.

Have you tried monitoring the temperature of the GPU when playing games?? It could be that the GPU is overheating. You could use GPU-Z to check the temperatures. It could be that the fan is set at too low a speed and you may need to increase it manually.

What util can I use to change the fan speed ?

I did look at the temps when gaming and they hovered at around 48 degress.

Did you use GPU-Z BTW?? GPU-Z will log the maximum temperature which the GPU reaches.

ATI Tray Tools,ATITool and RivaTuner can be used to change the fan settings manually.

I was using the inbuilt reading in Catalyst Control Centre, which also has the ability to adjust fan speed. Even with the fan running at 70% games still crash.

Msi afterburner has fan controls, stats and temperature readings.

i have identical msi 6850s and i have identical issues. Coincidence?

firstly go to amd and get the 10.10e drivers THEY ARE THE LATEST FOR THE 6850 CARDS. NOT THE 10.12

secondly if your using realteck drivers they are also a good suspect of the problem. Lucky for you you only have 1 card, i have 2

also your 6850 is overclocked, if you look at the name is says OC edition, its a factory overclocked card

I've had it running various stability tests all afternoon through the MSI software and it's been fine all afternoon, what am I missing ?

I really am thinking the card is faulty. Its not over heating, I've tried different drivers. I ran 3D Mark on it and it cut out as soon as I ran the first test on the card.

Going to try my 4850 but I suspect that will run fine, have decided to keep that too as my spare card.

Will be putting in a request for an RMA after the festivities and will be asking for a different card.

I e-mailed scan yesterday, and had a reply from wesley who said it was power supply. Not having any other higher spec supplies to hand I found myself in PC World and pay £70 for an OCZ Stealth Stream 2 600 Watt supply.

This morning while play Mafia 2 I had the same issue, after a short amount of time the card shut down. So not my PSU then, tried 3D Mark Vantage again, same thing happened. My old card still works, but I didn't buy a full new PC just to use my old card.

Hoping I get an RMA number now.

TBH, if the PSU powered a 4850 fine then it will power a 6850 fine.
