    back up nightmare

got an old 2.5 HDD from an old laptop (probs about 3 years old) wiped it, formatted it and put it in one of my hotswap style bays and started to run system back up on to it (80GB) after it went through weather i choose or let windows choose e.t.c. it sdatrted and stopped within 3 seconds saying was not able to create backup.

any ideas on how this can be rectified?

    Re: back up nightmare

this is a nightmare is it? really? check disk for bad sectors etc, then check there is sufficient real space on the drive for the amount of backup you need.

edit: yeah - 80gigs worth of backup will not fit on an "80GB" hard drive - due to LIES

    Re: back up nightmare

How much free space is there on the source HDD? That error is saying there isn't enough space to create a 'shadow copy' image - a method of backing up open files.

Or do what it says in the error message - check the event logs for VSS and SPP source messages. I think Watercooled has hit the nail on the noggin though - you won't be able to create a VSS without an amount of free space on the source drive.
