    Wont Boot Up

    Hi,

Ive recently bought a few bits to upgrade.

    Case - Coolermaster Praetorian
    PSU - Antec Truepower 550w
    MB - ASUS P4P800E deluxe
    CPU - P4 3.2 800 FSB Northwood
    Saphire Radeon 9800 Pro
    Ram - Corsair 3200 1gb (Pair of 512)

When i switch it on i get some garbled message from the Winbond Speaker, then it does nothing, the monitor stays in standby mode.
When i plug my Logitech 550 mouse in the USB port the light on the underside flashes then goes off.
Does anyone reckon the MOBO is nackered?

Am i missing something here, ive checked and double checked connections, but cant make head nor tail of it.

I would really appreciate any help on this

    cheers

    Paul

Do you get any beeping? If you do, then you should be able to find out what the code means.

Make sure that the heatsink is seated properly, all the headers from the fans and case are put together properly, the power goes to everything properly.

If you have a spare PC, you could swap out one component at a time to work out which one it is.

Try using 1 stick of ram at a time as well.
so your fans don't start to spin at all?
make sure your not shorting your mobo out.

I checked the Heatsink, took it off and put it back again, mind u those intel heatsinks never seem to go in very easy

The fans go apart from the top case fan, the molex connector seems to be broken for that one, so ive left it disconnected.

There are various other connectors comming from the PSU, really thin ones, no clue what they are, i just assume they must be for other devices.

tried the heatsink again, seems to fit in ok though.

Would i be correct in saying that if i remove this motherboard and put it in the new setup i wont be able put it back again and carry on using this pc?

I'm always weary when swapping around potentially faulty parts - you don't want to end up breaking anything else as a result.

CrapshoT: Surely thermal CPU ramping would mean that a mis-seated heatsink wouldn't cause such a problem?

Anyway, perhaps try taking the CPU out and then turn the thing on - see how mad the thing goes, or if it stops making garbled noises through the speaker.

Is the CMOS jumper set to clear instead of normal?

Have you checked your master and slave set up? My board didnt boot when i first set it up, because i didnt do that. But it never powered down. I'd take the CPU out, check all pins are not bent, because you said the heatsink was hard to seat. I strongly disagree, you line it up, push it down slightly so the clips go into the holders, then close the levers on each side (If you are using the standard Intel HS/F). Then try disconnecting everything apart from the CPU, RAM and graphics card. (if you havent already done so). Also, try running the mobo out of the case, with the cpu, ram and graphics card, incase the mobo is infact shorting on the case. Can you get to the BIOS? I'd have a look round in there also, make sure everythings as it should be.

    Hope this helps

Maybe you should try taking everything out of the case. Just connect the motherboard to the case and power supply (no graphics, IDE drives, no CPU, no RAM, etc.). If it doesn't beep at all, then it can only be a problem with the motherboard, case or PSU.
