and NOW....my PC takes ages to boot DOWN

Oh what is happening to my prescious baby

It boots UP quick enough.....but boot DOWN is over 2 minutes.....it gets stuck on the "Windows is Shutting Down your machine "bit...ie the last bit. A little hard rive activity....and eventually it powers down....over 2 minutes evert time

If you hit the power button....(6 seconds) it powers down OK, and is fine on boot up, no error messages.

Whas up NOW people ...its doing my head in...I think ity might be re-install time soon.

UNLESS......its one of the millions of patches from Microsloth that I downloaded last week....it was just after that that the problem began.

Pls....*whimper" I just want a normal gaming machine :sob:

Do you have the NVidia help service enabled? I think thats supposed to cause trouble when shutting down sometimes?

XP Pro.....and dont believe nVida helpis running.

I have had LOADS of stuff on and off my PC.....BUT..Cntrl Alt Del.....and then Processes is still less than a page...ie not much running.

I do wonder if its time for a fresh XP install.

I had that with 2kPro. Squillions of Knowledge Base articles couldn't help me, neither could troubleshooting individul apps.

Reinstalling over the top sorted it.

yep i got exactly same problem with 2kpro, 4 times outta 5 it will "hang" at the 'saving settings yada yada' screen for 1-2 minutes then shutdowns.. then sometimes just shutdowns fine :/

aint too worried cause if i'm in a hurry i just power off using power switch

Check the hard disk is set with all its caching enabled. Device Manager > Disk Drive > Properties > Policies I think...

I experienced the same problem under 98SE. I finally tracked it down to a network timeout that was set to 2 minutes or so. I never did find out exactly what timeout is was, but removing "Client for Microsoft Networks" from the "Networking" control panel applet fixed the problem.

INTERSTING THING......this is DEFINATELY a network issue.

If I boot into SAFE MODE with NO Network support..it shuts like lightning

I think its a scary netwrok thing......probably scaning my PC or summit

I rumage about - its profile related.
When you log off, XP pro tries to update your roaming profile (even if your not using one!) Its looking for your logon server to update it. (I know your not using one!)
Theres a reg hack to do it....

damn right we have, its quite annoying when its quicker to start up than to shut down

MS have also added an intensional delay - because of the fast shutdown times, information in the HD's cache (so many 8 meg ones out now with 7200rps spindle speeds) that it wasn't being written to the HD, and data was being lost.
