Angry hard disk space keeps vanishing!

Hi, my mum's PC seems to have a problem whereby the HD is full (800k or so free) but whenever something is deleted the space is quickly filled up again. I deleted about 300 MB of stuff in one go last night, checked the free space thing and it said 141MB free, checked it again seconds later and it said 4.1MB free then again and it says 887k free! Where's it going and how do i stop it?? Is this a virus, or does anyone know what is causing it?

    thanks guys!

ok use the search/find function in windows and select all files or folders and select a What size is it? of at least 100,000Kb. It will search and find any file which is abnormally large. I know I have seen a few office machines here that have had this problem with jabber log files but I am not sure if this is likely to be the reason with yourself.

    Swap file..

This is the designated area used by the hard drive when memory reaches certain levels.

Its using your drive space to store memory data hence eating up all the space.

I bet it runs like a dog as well at the moment?

    Silly question but...
Are you emptying the recycle bin and...are you emptying the Norton protected files(If you have Norton stuff on your computer)
