System won't boot

Right final problem (I hope) with my new system. I have just booted for the first time, post went fine and everything was detected ok the problem is I cannot get any further than that. I have tried changing the boot priority in the bios to boot from cd (to install win xp) but it won't have it. It simply hangs straight after post, whatever I choose as the primary boot method. I have included brief specs below, and done a search on forums / google but cannot find anything of any use. I'm sure it's something simple I am probably missing, but any help as always is appreciated

P4 3.2ghz
Abit-IC7
74g raptor on sata1
MSI dvd drive as master on IDE2
XFX Geforce 5900
