    HELP!! Connection Problems

Ok guys here's a good one for ya

A couple of days ago i noticed my net connection running slightly slower than before, now this is fairly normal because the 2 other users on our cable home network are fairly download heavy. But today MSN Messenger has started signing out every 3 minutes or so and it is now taking an age to open both IE and Firefox and another age to download the whole page even though when i go to download something like an mp3 i get 40k/sec. I have run Ad-Aware, Spybot, Hijack this and McAfee Stinger which are all fully up to date, they all found nothing. I checked my firewall (McAfee personal firewall plus) and it seems every time messenger signed out i got hits from baym-xxxx.msgr.hotmail.com these came up as either trojans or trojan scanners which the firewall took care of. My problem kinda sounds like this chaps but as you can see the soloution isn't that clear or you have to pay for it plus his virusscan found a virus which i don't appear to have... Any help would be muchly appreciated as this is driving me out of my mind

    Cheers

The connections from baym-xxxx.msgr.hotmail.com you can ignore, as Messenger routes its traffic through the Hotmail servers, and after you shut Messenger down the server will take a short while to stop sending you packets.
As the client process is stopped, the firewall erroneously picks this up as port scans on your machine.

I assume you are running some kind of router to share your cable connection?

    What OS is your PC?
Can you post your HijackThis log?

If you are using a router, uninstall your firewall as a test, or at the least disable it for a short while to see if it is affecting the speed.
I'm not familiar with McAfee firewall, is there anything in a log to say it blocked outbound traffic - DNS queries maybe (destination port 53)?

Tried creating a new user and logging in as it, to check it is not a profile problem?

I'll try uninstalling my firewall and see what happens, i was a bit wary of doing that incase it was a virus but...we shall see

I'll check if it is a profile problem aswell

    I shall return... Hopefully

ok, just uninstalled my firewall: no change to speed or messenger signingout/not signing in at all and it was the same for creating the new profile.

Wow, McAfee sure has a lot of running processes eh... are the other PCs on the network able to browse at normal speed?

Have you tried resetting the router?
