Video high8 to pc

HI guys,

I have a high8 camcorder that has a split AV(yellow)/ mono-audio(white) phono lead to interface normaly either with a scart adaptor or direct. I would like to get the film on to my pc and edit it if poss. My tv card has an AV in but the audio in seems to be a 2 banded mini jack, not the phono supported by the cam-c.

The lead interfaces with the cam-c as a 2 banded mini jack also and goes to the Y split av/audio.

If anyone has ideas as to how I could achieve this and edit it that would be great.

I just figured this out a few weeks back ! We bought a Sony Hi8 Camcorder just before Christmas !

Dont connect the camcorder up to the TV card (those leads I use just for connecting direct to a TV), use the USB cable you got with it and install the USB streaming driver from the manufacturers CD and any other drivers, then run the config on the streaming tool (first time you run it, it will want you to adjust sound, contrast etc).

Open up Windows Movie Maker (Under accesories on the Start Menu) and use this to capture the recorded video file onto the hard disk. With Windows Movie Maker you should be able to do some of the editing if not all of it. It allows you to add titles and credits, clipping, cutting and loads of other stuff. Its really easy to use, might take a few goes to get it exactly how you want it (Took me 2 attempts, I was doing my eldest daughters school Christmas Nativity and added a title, end credits and also cut off a little bit from the end)

Then save to the hard disk (Once again Movie Maker takes you through quality settings and the saving procedure via a wizard)

After that you can use something like Nerovision Express to convert it to DVD format and burn it (you can also do this onto a VCD if you dont have a DVD burner), also with Nerovision you will be able to do a bit more editing if required.

Thanks But There Was No Usb Cable Included I Checked The Box Contense, Maybe I Could Buy One Seperate? But The Only Port On The Cam-c Is That Mini Jack Port For The Scart! Is There Such A Usb Cable?

What make and model etc is the camcorder and I will look into it for you, we received a USB cable with ours, strange really as most camcorders now will connect up via USB as well as the standard cables for connecting to a TV.

On our camcorder the USB plug is pretty well hidden I must say, the other jack leads go in on the bottom but the USB plug is hidden behind what looks like a permanent seal on the front under the light on it !

Just having a scoot about and lo and behold you dont have a USB connector on it. However, I have noticed you can hook it up via a firewire card and cable apparently. (Sorry previous link was no good so Ive removed it, said it was for youre camcorder but just noticed it isnt (doh ! ))

But that means spending money !

So looking at what you already have you can hook it up to the TV card and get the picture but no sound ? Is that right ?

For the sound I would recommend getting a converter for the sound part of the lead so that it goes into the line in on the exterior of you're soundcard (small microphone jack, I picked one up years ago from Maplins. It takes the left and right audio lead and basically gives you the connection required to plug into the soundcard), this will give you the audio no probs at all (just make sure you have the line in enabled in the sound properties in control panel)

ok I've only got A/V Micro Input on the camera which means getting that converter (phono audio to mini jack for the sound card input) thanks for your help bro.

Ok I've just found an s-video port on my camcorder, used the s-video lead that came with my vga to plug in to the tv card but so far can't get the sofware to acknowlege the camcorder. to add a file it takes me into the file tree. The tv card manuel diagram says the s-video port is for connecting to VHS so is this an output only? which means i must use the a/v lead?
and I'm having trouble tracking down a audio rca to mini jack converter!

The TV card should have an input on it in one form or another, just have to shop about and see what you can find. If you have a Maplin near you go in with the camcorder and lead and explain the situation and if they dont have the converter they may be able to make one up for you

Nope just a converter:audio/video from camera Y(split) yellow video:to tv card, white audio: to converter (phono to mini jack) to sound card. That lead would do me no good in this instance, however thanx very much for ur pic.

one way, just use the normal arial out i.e. that would go to your tv, plug that in to your tv card tune in and happy recordings,

but i dont know about certain quality etc.

Sounds to me that all you need is one of these on the end of the white audio lead

These are just mono sockets though as that is going to be all your Hi8 is going to be outputting (on the left channel i presume as the lead is white) which will mean that after importing you will have to duplicate, the sound over to the right audio channel too

Or alternatively just get one of these

to split the audio onto 2 phonos and then take those 2 phono connectors into one of these, to give you sound on both left and right (although it wont actually be stereo, just the same audio from each side.) Save's you having to do it in the edit suit if you don't know how.
