Issues on 'new' build (DVD and sound card)

First time Ive had problems with a build and im now offically stuck
Bit of background, neighbours PC had started to freeze when loading W98 - would get to the main screen, start to load drivers/icons then nish nadda nothing. PC was full of various nasties, so I said 'I will have a look' couldnt find my 98 disks so formatted and installed W2K SP4.

First problem - can see the DVD drive in the BIOS, but doesnt show in W2K (worked in 98)
2nd Problem - neither the onboard sound, or a PCI soundcard now work. (also worked in 98)

No conflicts shown, all drivers updated (though not bios - yet) = me confused
Its an Abit VH6 II, 128mem, Matrox G200, cd & burner (2 drives), 40 gig HD (all channels set correctly in 1 master, 1 slave).

Anything obvious anyone can think of, have tried moving the PCI sound card to different slots, but no luck there either.
