    Random Restarts

I have a problem with random restarts, and they seem to be linked to Counter Strike: Source.

They also seem to be linked to when i press restart or when the system is restarted by, eg, a program installation.

The Pc will switch off and restart, when it reaches the cheak disk it finds loads of temp files which are invalid and then completes.

After a restart happens the system is prone to doing it again and unstable. Or, it is just fine.

I have tryed clearing the CMOS many times, and it sorts it out but then the problem comes back.

You can see my spec in my sig and i am runing XP Home SP2

    Thanks is advance.

Have you tried to reflash the BIOS witha newer version? Could have been a bad flash originally by the sounds of it

That sounds like Windows isn't shutting down correctly ... have you ever played with the program timeout length (in order to gain a quicker windows shutdown)?

I flashed the bios with winflash and it was fine for a few weeks after that.

I have never played with the timing thing.

Sounds like the BIOS chip may be faulty then and not storing the CMOS correctly.

Try putting a new CR2032 (iirc) in it

Hmmm could be driver-related. Anyway, to get the good old blue screens, just disable the automatic restart: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...l_02may13.mspx

This may indicates a certain file linked to a driver, which then should be reinstalled/updated/replaced by an older version.

To be sure it is not a faulty RAM, use Memtest: http://www.memtest.org/

For your E-stepping K8, be sure to have the newest BIOS version!
