Taking the heatspreader off an X2

Is taking off the heatspreader risky -for an old electronics fogey? Anyone got any links?

I got it yesterday-3800 X2 and loads of confusing things are happening

vcore from 1.33 to 1.38 all over the place is this power saving? the power supply is decent .

At this voltage the chip runs at 56° with mediocre cooling, is the chip just not sweet?

Also the new BIOS of the neo 2 Platinum k8n says that the RAM is just running at the divider speed for example 200 or 166 at any FSB , so I don't know what the doing! What's going on?

Something just crashed dammit! I just went offline and backpedalled too many pages! Sorry Can someone move the thread please? Thanks everyone for bearing with me. I will just be a moment. Thanks Pion! I'm really confused help

Actually this place says taking of the ihs only gives you only 50-80 MHz advantage and that the AMD soi is more brittle than the original silicon substrate?

Also when I changed the old chip yesterday I took off the heatsink that was thoroughly stuck in, and after yanking, the chip had come can clean out of the ZIF socket without undoing the lock! Original Arctic Silver is like superglue with that ihs- could've done better with araldite!

I'm sure it'll be moved by a nice friendly mod

Back on topic. I've heard that your best to do this on the X2's as the IHS doesn't make good contact with both cores. Shame I'm a total wuss + can't afford to throw away £400 if it goes wrong. Something to leave till later on mefinks

Sounds decent, I've just run prime 95 for two hours and a half 2.4 with only one error, but I think perhaps it will run for a long time on one of the corse and crash faster on the other? still it sounds almost stable. Just that little bit extra?

You should run Prime 95 on both of the cores at the same tme to determine stability

I did it, and almost voided a 230 pounds chip. Instructions online are really ****, I can't believe these guys who take so many photos leave so much to the imagination. it's important not to try and prize anything at all with more effort than it would take to turn a key, because that bends the chip and I didn't realise i was bending it and I could have cracked something in it.

To get how insane and unpredictable this was check this out-

The heatspreader as the 2 mm thick solid piece of metal that weighs about 1 ounce and it is glued with not a thin piece of glue
thick -piece of glue all-around side so u have to dig through 2 mm all-around side with a razor blade. You have to dig the point in the all-around like a can opener.but only 2 mm .

Even with lots of precautions that I bent some pins-you have to use your body to push the chip so that all the pressure is on edge and you virtually don't clasp the chip with your hands. You also really have to dig it nto some phome to give an extra protection.

Then when you get to the PC, if you put it straight in you risk burning the chip because being 2 mm lower it doesn't touch the heat sink any more. so you have too unscrew the square plastic around the socket and pull all the bits that hold the heat sink up out with pliers.+ to modify the heatsink so that it is tight even 2 mm lower.

    Really that was gnarly.

Sorry about the typing got to rush Cheers mods
