Today, my parents HD died. I'm very worried I'll loose their 300gb of data (mainly my stuff)

Don't ever let me near your computer. It's quite likely I have a freaky anti-HD aura that makes HD's have mechanical failures.

PATA = Parallel ATA... Oppsite to SATA.. so, yeah, just IDE
