    Memory problems.

    Hey,

Well, i seem to be having this reocurring problem with memory and Call of Duty.

I was running some cheap ram from a local pc store when Call of Duty came out, then when patch 1.4 or 1.5 was released my game all of a sudden became laggy and was constantly crashing and locking up my computer . So i looked around some forums etc and found that punkbuster was very strainious on memory....... I then desided to replace my memory and as if by magic CoD worked again (just as a side note, WoW and CS:S played fine online, as did Farcry, HL2 and some other game offline).

Fast-forward to today, I was playing fine in diff servers (on CoD2 now) then i entered a server with the new PAM beta (ClanBases mod for matches) and again i start lagging like crazy, the game starts locking up, programs in the background start crashing............

I ran memtest and it said the memory had no errors after scanning 30min, also only CoD1 and CoD2 seem effected by the lag and crashes :S

Can somone explain to me what the hell is happening before i go and by another gig of ram (2 gig down already) and the exact same thing happens ??

    Thank you
    Chris.

Edit/ Seems its effecting more than just CoD this time, i was running X-fire & Winamp when i desided to join Teamspeak. The computer locked up then came back round with a pop up message saying along the lines of 'Unknown hardware error, Status 128, Computer will restart in 60sec'. I dont know if thats any help but i thought i would just add it in

Memtest doest always show errors first time, I find it best to leave it running several iterations overnight to really stress it out. That aside there are many things that could be causing ur issues. Check for fan failure or reduced RPM due to a fan on its way out or full of 'fluff'. Check airflow, general case airflow plus pay attention to key areas like memory, CPU and gfx. Consider running things like defrag, spyware remover, registry cleaner. Check drivers levels, sometimes new mods are beta'd on new or beta drivers, bad I know but it happens, remember most modders are bleedin edge on their own systems. Check to make sure av is updated and a full system scan has run. You can be suprised what a spring clean can do, get rid of apps u no longer use, also disable hardware u dont use to free up resource, eg serial/parallel ports, floppy drive etc. Try a few things here and let us know how u get on

I ran AVG and Adaware, no virus and very little spyware (i knew this already as iv never had a prob with either). All the fans in the case are running fine and theres no dust or fluff stoping air-flow. Things like floppy drives etc are already disabled so i dont see them starting a problem and i uninstall programs i no longer need.

Ill install the latest drivers for the mobo and gfx card, defrag and run a reg cleaner but tbh last time i tried all of the above and nothing helped

Right i think iv sorted it

I swaped some ram for my dads computer into mine , it seemed fine for 20 min then started crashing again.......... then i ran a reg cleaner and found 80 errors in the regestry (oops). After fixing them the game went back to normal.

So, thanks for the tips, il end up using them again no doubt.
