Windows XP Auto Update - turned off but still downloads ?

I have the automatic update set to "notify me but don't automatically download or install them" but it still downloads them automatically. Anyone know why this happens?

    disable the service

within 30 seconds of switching on your pc-Windows update or "wuauclt.exe" starts up scanning for latest Xp fixes

once you see the task end it- it might take 2 attempts

if u have SP2- go to Start->Run and type without quotes "services.msc" and click ok

Scroll down to "Security Centre" right click on it -left click on stop-then right click again ,left click on properties - Under Startup Type -select "Disable" -click apply then click okay....

now this part is where it's applicable to all SP patches

services.msc again -this time find "Automatic Updates" - right click-left click on properties -select to "Disable" click apply the okay and then you should be alright
