Anyway... I used the hitachi tool thing, it said it fixed all the errors and such.. so I went to install WinXP.. told it to do a quick format as i didnt feel the full format was neccesary, installed ok... but took longer than usual. Anyway, when it loaded up, said the usual C:\ drive was as E:\, I didn't really like that, so thought I'd reboot and start the xp cd up again, told it to do a full format and it still freezes.

I really don't trust the harddrive, looks like I'm going to have to buy a new one..

knoppix can't write to ntfs drives, since microsoft keep the spec hidden from linux developers

heh, that explains that part then .

But the drive has been acting strangely, and been very slow. I'm just going to buy a new one. Found one for around £50, ATA, 120gb, 8mb cache.

Use a linux Live CD (or usb flash drive) distro like Slax... It doesnt give a monkeys about permissions. Mount the HDD, and copy files to another usb flash drive... sorted.

Saved all my emails that way when windows became corrupt and i couldn't fix it.

As others pointed out it won't mount read/write, I meant to use Knoppix to mount it and copy all your data off onto a drive that's not about to die on it's arse

    Ok.

Anyway, just ordered the above mentioned drive, should be with me within 3 working days. Got to live with my dads crappy 400mhz computer for the moment.

Sun has started coming out too, I'm afraid I'll burn my fragile white skin.
