I am considering buying a fresh copy of windows Xp Pro for my two home computers. If i purchase 1 copy of it will i be able to install it on both pc's or will i have to buy a seperate copy for each pc.

You could in theory but you would have to call Microsoft to activate the second one (saying you formatted the same computer )- first one could be activated online

legally you need 2 licences, as far as physical media goes, you only need one disc, make of that what you will
Alternatively you could consider Linux for one of the PCs, provided you don't plan on gaming on it. SUSE is a pretty straightforward distro to install.
Failing that, buy two copies to stay within the law. An OEM copy of XP Home is cheaper than Pro, and only loses a few areas of functionality: Dual processor support (still supports dual core & HyperThreading though) and some more advanced networking stuff.
either use linux (ubuntu is good) or just throw the law to the wind....
but, i would reccomend linux for any machine that doesnt need games......
