So I run Lavasoft's Ad-Aware a few times a week and it takes care of anything malicious it finds, but I was wondering if it'd be worth getting a program that actually prevents this kinda stuff from getting onto my system in the first place... any ideas?

Well, if you already use Ad-Aware, why not get the full version which includes a continuously running agent?
