    KILLDISK Alternatives and/or Assistance?

    Hey Guys,
I need to erase an external hard drive (connected via USB), something which would have been no problem using KILLDISK. This was possible on my other computer, but on the one I am on now, KILLDISK does not detect the external drive. I can only presume this is due to the dated P4B motherboard, which does not allow booting from USB, nor would it appear does it allow KILLDISK to use the USB bus (which is integrated). Before you say it, I can't use the other computer.

I am therefore wondering what options I have left open. I don't mind if it's freeware/pay-for software, but I need an eraser-tool which will operate in Windows and supports the Gutmann method (+1 paranoia ). Heidi Eraser doesn't delete whole disks, Boot and Nuke would wipe my Windows HDD which I still need, and I can't seem to find any other program which has Gutmann.

Could anyway suggest some alternatives which fit the criteria? If not, is there any method you can think of which would allow KILLDISK to identify the drive when attached to a motherboard which would appear not to support such a thing?

Thanks for any help you guys can give.

you've probably already thought of this and written it off, but is it possible to take the drive out of it's caddy and connect direct to your motherboard?

Unfortunately it's one of those integrated units, and if I were to do that the warranty would be voided.

There's a program called Clean Disk Security that can do secure deletion of files and drives etc. It's free (although some extra features require a registered version), but it might do what you want.

    Try BCWipe

It's not free, but it says it's "fully functional for evaluation purposes" (30 days). Supports Gutmann and runs from Windows so it should work with your drive.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, but unfortunately they all seemed to be aimed at individual files once I downloaded them. I'm looking for something which can specifically erase the drive as a whole, including boot headings etc. Unfortunately Linux is not possible due to my CD drive, well, not working.

Please keep the suggestions coming, though.

If you need to remove all traces of any deleted files from the free space on disc, you coudl fill the disc with file(s), and then use a secure deletion tool on them.

Thanks a lot for all the help guys, but I decided to bite the bullet, and remove the hard drive from the OneTouch II enclosure. Sure, that means the warranty is dead on it now, but it's just a standard IDE DiamondMax.10 drive inside, and it's working flawlessly in my PC now.

Thanks a lot for the help though, much appreciated.
