    Graphics card woes

Hi from an 'old newbie'. Don't play many games, but Asus en6800 has just died , possibly being placed too near adjacent card & got too hot by the novice that inserted it.

So I've been trawling the web trying to work out what to get next. Either a new one (pci e) around £100 or a decent used one maybe. Any other sources other than ebay recommended by you clued-up folks? Any advice much appreciated.

Is the card under 12 months old?

    Should be under warranty surely.

ASUS offer a 3 year warrenty on VGA cards http://support.asus.com/repair/repai...Language=en-us

Even if you just go out and buy a new card, might be worth doing the RMA and having something to sell in a few weeks.

TBH I dont think heat killed your 6800, GPU's can take more heat than just about any PC component. Did you get any temp warnings/fan spinning at 100%?

Thanks for replies chaps. The Asus 6800 was bought 2nd hand from ebay, age unknown, so I don't think I have a claim.......?
The computer was new December '05 from PC World & I presumed the included graphics card would be adequate for me...... The game I play most is Silent Hunter 3 & I've been told it's a "resource hog". A pal is a Hardware manager in a local business & he said the 6800 would do the business, & it was ok, until the failure when the picture froze, defragmented, & lost all video.
Wasn't aware of the fan going bananas when it failed,- it always ran at same speed when games were running. There are no obvious hotspots & there's no smell that's typical on pc boards...... When the 6800 was removed the computer worked ok using the onboard graphics.

    What's RMA chuckskull......?

Might as well ask this now too..........SH3 requires cards to be DirectX 9 (or later) compatible & I've noticed that some newer cards mention it on Scan's site & some don't, but I've found on Nvidia's pdf that a card is compatible..........will they ALL be or will I have to check any potential buys??
    Thanks. Gary

just about every card that you can buy new from scans site is DX9 compatible. u should be ok!
an RMA is a Return Merchandise Authorization and basically says that if ur card is buggered, if its under warranty, Asus will issue you with a number, in order for them to track progress of the return through to completion of the new piece of kit being sent out to u.
I'd recommend a 7600 as an update to the 6800, you should be able to pick up one for cheap cheap, and they dont run too hot

You'll need to contact ASUS and tell them your story. http://support.asus.com/contact/cont...Language=en-us No guarentees, but companies will usuallly replace the card as a goodwill gesture.

    Where to repair?
Normally, the standard procedure is to contact your Reseller (place of purchase) for repair/exchange. However, if your reseller is no longer in business or unavailable, please contact your nearest ASUS office directly.

You may also write to us. We will arrange technical support personnel to solve your case.

No problem, be warned it could take a while before you get a card back.
