Help needed on 1st build please - Boot problems

Hi i have just finished installing all hardware on my 1st build and then booted the bios (f2) But it cannot boot my XP disc? I have done everything correct "I think" such as; via boot order; 1st cd/dvd, 2nd HD. Also ive disabled onboard sound (theres no onboard graphics), disabled Sata, floppy, the things it did not detect i set to Auto...But Nishba! It has recognised the HD and for some unbeknown reason a non existing floppy! But none of my DVD/CD's? I have no Sata drives installed, the HD is on the primary IDE (blue) and set to master. The 2 removable drives are on the 2nd IDE. Dont understand!! Any clues Please Folks? [Setup below.]

have you set the jumpers on the pata drives to master/slave?

edit: found me glasses

what i was meaning to say was...the drives on the second ide channel, have you set them to master and slave?

Doh No i will check but they was OK together on my old pc! Thank you Clunk!

Also more importantly Cl;unk ive noticed soon as i get in the Bios my cpu (amd 4800+ x2) Temps are at an astonishing 40c which seems high to me,on my old p4 they NEVER went over 40c! I did do the heatsink correctly "I think" and the Fans is spinning!

Welcome to AMD, 40C is not hot. Just wait till you start playing a game

The reason you probably never witnessed your P4 hotter than 40 degrees was because the temp monitor in your bios was duff! P4's are notorious for running hot.

An AMD 4800+ is going to run fairly warm as it is a dual core CPU. Invest in some decent cooling and you will see the temps come down

As for your original issue... Try turning the floppy controller off in the bios and make sure that both IDE channels are enabled. If you are not using SATA then turn that off as well. Also try the system with just one optical drive installed as master (on the second IDE channel).

Which method of cooling are you using ?

Scythe Ninja Plus with the 120mm fan @ 40% ~ 5V = 760rpm. Rear case fan (Sharkoon 2000 120mm) @ 5V ~ 1000rpm and Seasonic S12 430W with fan which runs @ 760 rpm. Oh yes, Zalman 900Cu on the GFX card @ 5V.

The key thing is the low Vcore. It will run 2800 on 1.4V, but 2400 is fast enough for my requirements, and that 0.2V makes quite a difference.

Fair enough, but does it make enough difference to justify running slower...you may as well milk it for all its worth.

If it runs fast enough for the applications I use, then it's fast enough.

I ran at 2800 for a number of months. I noticed no real performance drop when I dropped to 2400. I find the biggest speed restraint is the hard drive to be honest.

Oh, and running at 1.2V & 2400 allows me to run the PC near silent - that is more important to me that a few extra benchmark points...

Edit: PS. I'm still actually o/cing it - the stock speed is 2000.
