Nothing unusual about that in itself... Its just stalled before completion of POST. Usually you get some message or other saying refreshing blah blah dma pool etc (can't remember what it normally says tbh!) and I have known boards freeze at that point due to incorrect bios settings and dodgy hardware.

hi all the ram has finally arrived, and the paperweight on my desk is now back to being my computer.many thanks to everyone for the help.when i brought the mobo + motherboard on e-bay it said the 512 of ram was only a month old.is it normal for it to fail or could i have shortened its life with my grfx card using some of the ram. or could this motherboard eat ram

ram should last a long time, and no the video wont shorten its life.
it must have had a flaw that didnt show itself until your PC died. put it down to experience and glad your up and running again

All cool and quiet does is basically slow down your processor and the fan when there is no load on it therefore making it cool and quiet (<) and since it is an engineering chip maybe they felt it easier to skip cool and quiet as they would most likely just stress test it? In any case disabling cool and quiet will definately NOT harm your pc, all overclockers (if they don't they should for the sake of stability and safety due to varying speeds) disable this to increase stability.

The only thing to say regarding cool n quiet is don't overclock when using it as this tends to make it boss eyed

Also if its an engineering sample chip then it may not have a normal divider (e.g. its unlocked!!!) and thus cool n quiet is unable to correctly alter the multiplier (divider) down etc.

I alrady told him not to have it on further up the page but good point about the unlocked multiplier but considering the problems already encountered i probably wouldn't play around with it.

(minor hijacking) ps. Ultim8um what x2 core do you have? and what rated speed?

I have an X4200 which is sposed to run at 2.2 Ghz stock and is perfectly happy at 2.6Ghz (I haven't tried to push it further as I am away alot and its running at the same speed as the Opty 146 I took out)

Yer i suppose thats fair enough and your not likely to see a worthwile performance boost for the risks that could arise.

After successful build and Windows install I suddenly had no BIOS post but with power on and all lights blazing... first time on this forum fixed it for me... it was a tiny spot of thermal compound on the CPU contacts.... cotton bud and meths and up we booted no problem.

I used white thermal grease fortunately which I imagine isn't conductive like the silver stuff.

According to the label it contains Silicone, Mental (sic) Oxide, silicone oil.

    Hope this helps
