Does my dvd writer have to spin at full speed all the time???

I have yet another gripe with my new system.
Every time I put a dvd in my dvd writer, it spins the disc at full speed (very noisey and unnecessary).
I just wondered if someone can tell me what the best way of getting it to run slower is?

If the drive is running all the time there's something accessing it constantly. I assume you mean it runs only when the disc is first inserted, when the OS needs to check the disc's content. You can decrease the amount of access needed by turning off autoplay.
