That's why they now need an extra power connector right?

I will reiterate it was rumour. For all I know someone may have seen a 9800GTX, missed the X off the end and this thing just came about from there. We'll wait and see. I've seen nothing to suggest it's a worthy upgrade for anyone unless you're still on a 7800, 7900 or X800 (perhaps X1900, though I'm not sure there's enough of a jump in most instances - you'd have already upgraded).
Maddock, I'm not sure the move from 65nm to 55nm will make much difference for the 9800 parts. It's not as if they're overly warm and loud at the moment. It's bordering on critical for the GTX2x0 though - they might even be able to crank out a (marginal) GX2...
Where it will help NV is in their margins. I read a little while ago that for a lot of the G92 period the yields were so poor that they'd been making a loss on each chip. A half-decent 55nm process will help that no end.
The new card may be nearly the same as the old but if the cards price is say 15-20% lower than the current 8800GT as well as it being cooler and drawing less power then Nvidia has a very big market still, that it can sell at for that range of card.
Apart from points made by GrahamC, the only reason I can find for them to release this is to completely kill off the 8800GT market and focus driver support on the 9 series and beyond.
It seems funny with the next range of higher end cards out in a week or two.
