It's a good idea, but I think they'll have to cover the vast majority of England, including the North East, and not just the cities if they want it to be as effective as it potentially could be!

Really? Surely its a cost thing, whilst they've invested in some camera cars, there is obviously a limit as to what they can afford. Obviously it makes a lot of sense to start with the most densily populated areas?
This is why the whole of greater london is about 80% done, because so many people live there in such a small area its kinda like a maze.
The big question is when will it be working on the mobile versions!
throw new ArgumentException (String, String, Exception)
I like the way that if you go through the done places, it's london, yep
bristol, yep
manchester, yep
sheffield, yep
scunthorpe, wait what?
I agree with that, and I'm not saying that it isn't already good or covering a large area, but because of that I think its overall potential is much, much bigger and that unless the majority of the UK is covered, it may not fulfil that potential.
Having said all that though, it's not really where gets captured as no doubt it will all get done eventually, it is like you say; which I hadn't actually thought of tbh, when it will be working on the mobile versions.

The cam car has been around the villages here too, but they aren't up yet.

where i use to live
Guys at work saw it when they went running

i didn't see the google van but i was following an European van with cameras mounted all over the top of it in Lincolnshire, i wonder if they use various companies to map for them as well
If you open http://maps.google.co.uk and drag the little man over the map without zooming in, you will see all the areas of the UK and Europe they have covered already.
Saw one of the cars in coventry, camera was folded down under wraps though. Tried to take a picture when i stopped behind it at a zebra crossing but selected video by mistake & missed it!
Coventry has already been mapped out, so guessing they were doing some of the outer regions/just passing through.
What GOOD comes from this?
Apart from viewing houses for potential buyers, what else would you use this for?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Insurance claims - fraud prevention - you can look at the area to see if there are environmental parameters that couldd have contributed, e.g. lamposts, sharp corners
Accident investigators - as above
Police tactical teams - best routes to cut people off, best positions to be hidden from view, best points of entry
Family, allows you to see the area where family live if you are unable to visit due to various conditions
Navigation - things look totally different and it is easier to 'find your barings' if you have a view of the street, rather than ariel view or map
there are many uses in many industries and walks of life...
When this gets pushed out to the mobile maps clients, it will be fantastic!
Never mind having to use the classic map or buying some turn by turn software from the likes of TomTom, I could quite happily use this for navigation. As a bonus, all the images are during the day, so when you are trying to navigate at night, you can see things a good bit more clearly in the StreetView data.
Also, as always the APIs are open, so it will be interesting to see what clever uses of this data people will come up with.
