Ah but how short people's memories seem to be..

XP on release wasn't pretty - but years of updates have slowly erased people's memories of it. The Vista public beta was utter crap - the build directly after was much much better (odd that and a big mistake on MS' part). Vista hasn't been a problem for me aside from driver issues for the first year or so - mostly due to nVidia tbh.

7 appears to be masterfully marketed and a darn good product too.. RC tomorrow on MSDN

Agreed. XP only really became the OS it is after SP2, which everyone will agree was a monster of a Service Pack.

Vista needed SP1. Thats not bad actually. Win2K needed SP3 (and went to SP6), XP needed SP2 (and went to SP3), Vista needed SP1 (and only gets SP2).... and by the sounds of it, Windows 7 is good on release. Might there only ever be one service pack for it?

    I say well done Microsoft!

Re: News - Microsoft Windows 7 Release Candidate coming in two weeks

ive only used windows xp service pack 2. never used it before that. xp has always worked well on my parents computer.
vista did crash alot before SP1. since SP1 only issues come from third party stuff.
I think its quite good to be able to make it very reliable after one service pack even after all the major under the hood changes.
it will be interesting to see if windows 8 will be revolutionary or evolutionary.
cant wait to try windows 7 RC. beta worked great on my machine. far better than vista SP1.

If Win7 delivers what is hoped, I can see it having a similar time in the market place to XP. Which would mean Windows 8 can be revolutionary (in a development strategy sense).

Although, the bonus of being back to numbers, MS can easily release a 7.5

What kind of server is it?

I have to admit that my one frustration with 7 is how hard it is to persuade it to network nicely with other (Windows XP) computers. I can't just set up a shared folder and then drop stuff into it from XP (as far as I can see, anyway) - I have to jump through lots of networking hoops. It's not a "problem" as such, but it's a bit annoying... and if it plays the same way with Domain controllers I can see it have a slow uptake in the business world...

Re: News - Microsoft Windows 7 Release Candidate coming in two weeks

I along with the rest of my friends took up XP Pro as soon as we saw how easy it was to network when an early adopter friend showed us. Win98 SE was ditched in days. XP always worked reasonably well for me and SP2 was the icing on the cake. It's given excellent value for money.

Vista in contrast just seemed too much of a nightmare for little real world gain to bother with i.e. DX10 - it's minimum specification requirements were a joke and had poor driver support. I wasn't going to pay for it just to find out. On the other hand 7 is looking like the real deal with good reviews of the beta and mostly happy bunnies all round so I'm going to install it as a dual boot to get used to it. MS need to get this right and I'd be happy to pay a reasonable price (plus maybe a bit more) for 7 if it lasts as long as XP.

I'm pleased with Windows 7 and will be using the RC as my main os when its publicly available. Should give me a good head start on the official release
