But that misses the point. If you don't have another machine available, it's a lot of hassle having to go somewhere else just to download the Firefox binary just to bring it back home and install it on your new machine. Microsoft made a total brainfart out of this one.

Back on topic, I wont be bothering with Win7 for awhile, I'll probably leave it till SP1 before taking another look at it.
I totally disagree, I think this is one of the best decisions MS made. They had to get the idiots that are the EU off their backs. And the key point, is that 99% (there is aways one ) of the people who buy a copy of Windows 7, has the knowledge of how to install an OS. Which means you most definetly have the knowledge of how to stick a browser installer on a disc or USb drive.

Anyone who is incapable of installing an OS or knows nothing about PCs, will either not even know what Windows 7 is, or will have it pre-installed on their computer, in which case the OEM will have installed a browser for them.

I actually think MSs move had helped the other browsers, as a result, I decided to try out some new browsers, and I have now been converted to an Opera user

In stock again as of now.

I've stuck a preorder in with amazon and cancelled my play.com I made just to cover my bases.

What is everyone getting - Home Premium or Professional?

Honestly, thinking about just getting a TechNet sub now. With all the computers in the house, I'd soon be paying atleast double what the TechNet sub is now.

I oredered home premium at 0200 this morning (insomnia) £44.97 is a good price (£5 cheaper than I was expecting), I think that for most users that home premium will be the best choice as I don't think that the extras in professional are worth an extra £50, although the xp mode may have been useful, but if any software doen't run so be it. Of course this is just my opinion, and some people will benefit from professional.

Re: News - UK Windows 7 pre-orders begin tomorrow, will you be placing an order?

Well I'm taking advantage of the pre-order prices, I've ordered a copy of Home Premium for my HTPC (replacing XP MCE) and a copy of Pro for my main rig (either to replace XP Pro 64 or go to a future i7 build, I've yet to make up my mind) as I've a few apps that simply will not run on Vista, let alone 7 and virtual XP would come in handy.

From the posts on the various threads
    http://forums.hexus.net/operating-sy...pre-order.html
I'd say that HP is being ordered more often. Certainly that's what I've booked.
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

Microsoft store seems to have been overwhelmed by demand and is impossible to access!

    Pre-ordered from Play.com instead.

No. Why would I?.. If Microsoft keep the price high by the time SP1 is out, I just wont buy it. It's that simple. I already have a Vista license, and Vista works spot on, so why would I pay even half belt for Vista SP3?

Which is hardly giving the consumer a choice. OEMs have always had that choice.

The correct thing to do would have been to add a package manager, and give the user a list of browsers (and even other types of software) they can choose from, the PM would then go off and install said software, and the user is ready to go, all from the same machine without having to revert to sneakernet installation techniques. Why don't we bring back the floppy disk while we're at it?

Still running XP here, and have never touched Win7 yet. But at these prices I'm very tempted to grab a pre-order of Win7 Professional. Even if I don't use it immediately upon launch, it's worth getting a full, legit retail licence for three or four years' future use.

Ordered my copy from Amazon UK. They have the Pro Edition at £89.99 at the moment on pre-order which seems to be £10 less than was expected. Niice.

Just ordered a single copy now - so they are def refreshing every hour or so as when I tried earlier, it was unavailable. Debating whether or not to get 2 more at this price, and then just cancel depending on the price of the the 'family pack'... But this will be for my HTPC - hope that the improvements in the Media Centre are worth it.

Fair enough, if Vista works fine for you then that makes sense.

Not necessarily, they might already be using an OS on the system they plan to use Windows 7 on, and they could download it first (onto a USB stick etc.) before undergoing the installation of Windows 7.

Got the Amazon one, had an order with play but cancelled it once I realised what was happening with Amazon refreshing the page every hour or so. Can't believe how good a deal this is- M$ must know that only a small percentage of people actually by an OS on disc, so they won't lose so much revenue through the offer.
