Sorry, but that's utter tosh IMO.
Microsoft have spent money hand-over-fist to get the virtual monopoly they have, they have cornered markets left and right.
I want to game using keyboard and mouse, thats what I grew up with, that's what I am confortable with...combine that with not wanting to be restricted by choice of game and I have to use Windows.......and that's not because of MY REQUIREMENTS....it's because of the way Microsoft have paid their way into developers hearts. Ramming DirectX down everyones throats until 99% of games require it.
So, I'll delete windows in a minute and then install ubuntu.
How many of my games will play now? I presume you have a link to DirectX for Linux kicking around? (a properly working one, rather then a it-may-work-it-may-not and your unsupported if your new shiny game doesn't work with it)
No? Well, perhaps you have a link to DirectX for OSX?
Damn.....DirectX for Solaris? FreeBSD? Anything other then Windows?
What a choice!
As for the Wii. I never bought one for a good reason.......they are a fad. A novelty. And I saw it immediatly. People went nuts over them for 6 months or so, now the secondhand market is full of them because the novelty of waving your arms around has worn off.
This choice you talk about is not really a choice. It is dictated by what software you want/need to run and thus, is meerly an illusion of choice.

I never had any serious problems with Vista but am surprised you hear you both say this.
Sure Win7 isn't any faster for 3D gaming but with everything else like multitasking desktop apps and file operations it kills Vista. The new features are icing on the cake.
Why is everyone only seeing Windows 7 as 'will it or will it not make my system faster?'
It's also such a far more better designed system as a whole, and for something that isn't even out yet it's very stable and solid, in both x86 and x64 flavours. People are forgetting it's an operating system, so user interactivity and ease of use are priority, and while there are no hugely significant changes and difference from Vista (particularly in terms of appearance), as a whole it's a far more better and franlkly less annoying system to use.
As for the topic at hand here, I think this was fairly inevitable since hackers and pirate crackers are capable of anything and everything these days lol!

i find 7 to be a lot faster than vista is in general use on my laptop, however xp is still faster than both of those operating systems. vista also takes up a lot of space when installed. on a 30gb ssd thats not acceptable for me.
What I meant by loyal vista user, is one who bought it at the start and suffered all the issues.
Its just annoying to spend money on Vista for MS to then realise that it was a mistake, fix it, and instead of fixing it in a service pack they make more money by rebranding it as Windows 7. A good customer service would be to reward those who put up with the annoying problems Vista created (and XP didnt).
Maybe a free upgrade is stupid, but I do feel as a purchaser of Vista that I should at least got it somewhat cheaper than the guy who stuck with XP (smart guy).
Its called customer service.
I can already see the headlines tomorrow:
A Lenovo engineer committed suicide after he was allegedly roughed-up by company security services when one of the Windows 7 OEM keys entrusted into his care went missing...........Lenovo has confirmed that his family will be paid roughly $44,000 and given an Lenovo laptop as compensation for his death.
Reading the details (for information only - I'll wait for by Pre-order to arrive), Microsoft have boobed slightly and any Vista OEM certificate with a SLIC 2.1 in the BIOS will activate with the Levono key.
Wouldn't be surprised if the first update by Microsoft is to block Vista certificates...

What an oxymoron. You want to choose a specific subset of games and also not be restricted?
If I want to play GT5 I'll have to get a PS3 - oh noes! What an outrage that I can't run it on my netbook!
Face up to the facts - you have willingly made a choice that limits your options - you can't then turn around and say that someone else is forcing you to use Windows.
Last time I checked neither the PS3, Wii or DS used DirectX, and they sell far more games than DirectX enabled ones........and that's not because of MY REQUIREMENTS....it's because of the way Microsoft have paid their way into developers hearts. Ramming DirectX down everyones throats until 99% of games require it.
