Re: News - Apple launches the iPad

As soon as apple put an 'i' in front of anything, it'll sell. Doesn't matter if it's completely pointless. I was looking forward to hearing what all the fuss was about, but it just seems to be an over sized touch. Be better with, and probably cheaper going with a netbook. It obviously depends on the price, but don't know where it's going to fit in the market.

I was thinking about this earlier, it would be really interesting if this was a flop. The knee jerk reaction from the Apple board and their shareholders would be quite significant I'm sure, especially with Steve Jobs recent ill health.

    No webcam, apparently.

Can't help feeling it's neither one thing nor the other.

Meh. I'll wait for a good windows equivalent type of tablet... where it does everything better, with better hardware.

HSK, they've been around for 10 years. Its just no one cares, because virtually no one needs a full slate pc.

Ink Art and OneNote where the only usefull applications to emerge, with maybe crayon physics too.

But it was released at $2,300!!! Who is Motion? Where can you actually buy this?

It isn't that slates/tablets are new exactly, but they have either been too expensive, not widely available or not marketed properly.

There's no reason I should have to pay £500 or more for a tablet based on a netbook. Hell, you can get a decent looking 11" netbook in Tesco for £250, but not a tablet without a keyboard for £350? that's giving them more margin, and they don't even need to give me a keyboard or track pad! just a touch screen. Drop the Expresscard and SD card slots too if you want, just bluetooth, ethernet and a couple of USB ports would do.

Lenovo has a more interesting product where it is a netbook but the screen detaches with a snapdragon processor.

But then most people like simple restrictive products.

Exactly, people want things that work, worth with their other things and doesnt look like lego sick.

Personally I dont think this device matters, it's the underlying OS that will make or break this.

Just what I was thinking, if its an intuitive consumer device then that will more than satisfy the mainstream market. And those sort of devices are what apple does best.

Plus "lego sick" made me laugh

Scrap that. What I meant to say was, a low power, thin/lightweight CHEAP tablet. Not a laptop with the screen flipped around.

I think lots of people love that design but somehow it is not getting through in sales or something. Remember the HP TC1000? A classic design.
